Bayer Polyurethane Raw Materials Protect, Bind and Seal Construction and Infrastructure Projects

From Boston Harbor's Deer Island treatment plant to Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the San Antonio River Walk, Bayer polyurethane coating raw materials and technology are protecting structures all across North America. Polyurethane coatings formulated with Bayer's coating raw materials provide long-term corrosion protection and increase the service life of exposed components of buildings, water tanks, bridges, stadiums and more.

Typically, two-component solventborne systems are used for basecoats, intermediate coats and topcoats, but increasingly architects are specifying waterborne systems. Developed by Bayer, this system dramatically reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by up to 90 percent. Bayer was honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the Green Chemistry Award for creating a coating system that uses water instead of chemical solvents, thus reducing VOCs.

Another system quickly gaining popularity is the moisture-cured polyurethane paint system. It is capturing a growing share of new construction projects, especially when productivity and long-term performance are required. The moisture-cured system is able to withstand heavy abrasion during shipping, low temperature cure (down to 20°F) and high humidity. It also offers excellent resistance to yellowing and chalking or degradation caused by sunlight.

A relatively new chemistry to the construction and infrastructure markets is polyaspartic coating technology. Polyaspartics enhance the use of conventional two-component aliphatic polyurethane coating technology by providing faster dry times and higher film builds. Bayer has specific raw materials and formulation expertise in polyaspartic chemistry, which are explained in more detail in our Polyaspartic Coating Technology section.

No matter which system you use, polyurethane coatings deliver numerous benefits:

  • High-performance corrosion protection
  • Easy graffiti removal
  • Long-lasting color and gloss retention
  • High chemical and abrasion resistance
  • Fast cure times
  • Low maintenance
