BMS Introduces Company’s First Medical-grade PC/ABS Blends
BMS has expanded its offering of Bayblend® PC/ABS (polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) blend resins with the introduction of Bayblend DP M850 and Bayblend DP M850XF resins . These new resins represent Bayer’s first medical-grade PC/ABS blends and expand the company’s robust portfolio of medical-grade polymers.
The new grades, which join BMS’ existing family of Bayblend resins, offer a favorable combination of properties, including impact resistance, rigidity, dimensional stability, color stability, thermal stability and processability. CUSTOMER APPLICATIONS – Orqis Medical Corporation’s Cancion® System
For patients suffering from congestive heart failure, Orqis Medical Corporation’s Cancion® System offers an investigational method to supplement the heart in its blood pumping duties. The Cancion System provides continuous aortic flow augmentation using an innovative centrifugal pump and proprietary catheters to take pressure off the heart. Methods for Considering Creep in the Design of Medical Applications Using Makrolon® Polycarbonate
During the design phase of a plastic part, a design engineer must consider all of the end-use requirements the product is expected to experience throughout its lifecycle. Often a product will be exposed to a variety of structural loads. Long-term or continuous loading can cause a phenomenon referred to as creep, or worse, creep rupture. Creep can affect the performance and life of a product and, therefore, must be understood and accounted for to assure product integrity.

Using a Surface Treatment to Improve Adhesion of Makrolon® Polycarbonate to Various Hard-to-Bond Materials
Makrolon® polycarbonate is commonly used in medical applications in which it needs to be bonded to various other materials. Either because of their inherent chemical structure or contaminants on the surface (such as additives, plasticizers and mold release agents), these materials often have low surface tension, making adhesion difficult. To promote adhesion, various processes are used to either remove surface contaminants or change the surface chemistry. Different types of surface treatments can improve the adhesion properties of materials.

Bayer Announces New Makrolon® Polycarbonate Grade Designations for FDA Food Contact Compliance
BMS recently updated the product nomenclature for its Makrolon® polycarbonate grades for food contact and medical applications in all global regions. Grades 2408, 2458, 2508, 2558, 2658, 2808, 2858, 3108 and 3158 of Makrolon polycarbonate have been and will continue to be targeted for the medical applications requiring biocompatibility compliance.
In the past, these grades were also supplied for applications that required FDA food-contact compliance. The new designations of these grades have been changed as noted in the attached PDF.
